Weald Village Remembers D-Day
On Thursday 6 June Weald Village — in common with other communities around the country — will be commemorating the 80th anniversary of the D-Day Landings, the largest seaborne invasion in history and the military operation that ultimately led to the defeat of the Nazis in 1945.
The anniversary of that victory will be celebrated next year in appropriate style. This year’s event will be more restrained but no less important as we remember the bravery of the thousands of service personnel — many of whom had prepared for the landings in the woods and fields around our village — who took part in the landings.
The Parish Council is urging residents of all ages to remember them by congregating on the Village Green from 8.15pm as we read tributes, listen to a performance of wartime music by the Weald Amateur Pantomime Society and light the beacon at 9.15pm. The activities will finish by 9.45pm. But The Windmill will be open all evening for supper and drinks.
Weald is a village of about 1,200 people lying on the Low Weald, in gentle rolling countryside just south of Sevenoaks, Kent. The village and its surroundings are in the Metropolitan Green Belt and are entirely within the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
